Site and Post Visibility

During website construction or every maintenance, you might not want your site to be visible to search engines since it causes inconvenience to visitors. Thankfully, WordPress gives you the option to disable the visibility of your site on search engines temporarily.

Simply navigate to Settings > Reading > Site Visibility.

If the option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is not selected by default, make sure to click on it manually.

Furthermore, you can customize which audience has access to exclusive content on your post. To edit your post’s visibility:

  1. Add a post or edit an existing one.
  2. Click on Document Settings. If this option is unavailable, click on the Gear icon beside the “Publish…” button.
  3. Within the Status & Visibility section and next to Visibility, click on the link Public.
  4. Select from the options Public, Private, and Password Protected.
  5. Click on Publish or Update to save the changes.

Site Title and Tagline

You have the option to modify not only the title of your website but also its tagline thanks to a handful of popular WordPress themes. To access this option, go to Settings > General > Site Profile.

Site Title is the portion where you get to provide a name for your website. You may include your company’s name as well.

Site Tagline, on the other hand, is the section where you can enter a summary of what your business entails. Just do your best to keep your tagline as brief and meaningful as possible.

Custom Permalinks

Every default page and post on a WordPress site sometimes comes with an auto-generated URL. However, this URL is made up of a sequence of numbers that cannot be recognized easily and are not search-friendly. This is where permanent links (permalinks) enhance your site’s visibility further.

To create a customized permalink structure, go to Settings > Permalinks and choose Post Name. Your permalink structure may consist of keywords from any page title or post. Moreover, you can alter permalinks from the text editor for both pages and posts.

Web Address and Site Address

Back when the Internet was still an emerging technology, each web address required the “www.” prefix. Although this component is not needed today, some people still include “www.” when logging on to a website or doing a site lookup.

Since having the prefix as part of the website name will improve a site’s visibility, you may use this scenario to your advantage. One particular SEO setting in WordPress gives you the option to have your domain show the www or non-www version of the URL of your site.

Navigate to WordPress Settings > General. Add your chosen URL to “Web Address” and “Site Address” from there and you are all set.
